1980 Returned from NSW and played in the Canterbury SHA (Hockey South) 2nd grade premiership team

He coached A Grade Women’s Indoor Team included future wife Lee, Cecil and Claire Pearce

1981 – 1986 Indoor A grade men’s Coach with Barry Collins that won 5 ANNUAL premierships in a row. Barry coached the first three years and Eric coached the last two.

It has been observed that Eric’s contribution to indoor hockey generated so much momentum and success for both the Canterbury men’s and women teams that Canterbury’s dominance effectively killed the competition

Canterbury fielded two indoor teams but lost to University

The indoor competition in the south was discontinued with the opening of the THC
